Marine Turbocharger Maintenance Checklist for Ship Engineers
Regular care is the cheapest way to avoid turbocharger breakdowns. Always follow the maker’s instruction manual, but this checklist covers the practices that matter most.
- Log exhaust gas temperature before and after the turbine, and scavenge air pressure.
- Listen for unusual noise or vibration.
- Check lube oil pressure, temperature, and sight glasses (where fitted).
- Look for oil or exhaust gas leaks around joints and casings.
- Carry out turbine and compressor washing as recommended by the maker, and only under the specified conditions.
- Keep air filters and silencers clean so the compressor stays free of contamination.
- Keep the charge air cooler clean, because a fouled cooler raises load on the turbocharger.
Lubrication care
- Use the correct oil grade and keep it clean.
- Change oil and filters at the intervals given for your model.
- Watch for water or metal particles in oil samples.
Periodic inspection and overhaul
- Inspect bearings, rotor, nozzle ring, and labyrinth seals at the interval set by the maker or by condition.
- Check rotor balance and clearances during overhaul.
- Replace worn parts instead of reusing them past their limits.
7.Refit the thrust piece and re-measure. Use a mallet to seat the thrust piece back into the slot, then repeat the depth-gauge measurement to confirm the lead now matches the specified value.
Keep the right spares onboard
Carrying critical spares can turn a possible breakdown into a short planned job. Common items include bearings, gasket sets, nozzle rings, and, for some units, a spare cartridge or rotor.
Consistent logging, cleaning, and timely overhaul protect uptime and cut lifetime cost. Sindhu Marine FZE can help you plan spares for your turbocharger model.
